A Guide to What Your Dog Should Really Be Eating

March 21, 2016 by Jillian 2 Comments

a guide to what your dog should really be eating

When I first went vegan about six years ago, it didn’t take long at all for me to look at my dogs and wonder “What about them?” I began to do research about what my dogs were eating, which at the time was store bought dog food. I discovered that a lot of the same things that are good for humans are good for our domesticated companions, and that many people make homemade dog food over feeding them processed foods. I also discovered that when I whenever I cooked food for them at home, they wolfed it down faster than the speed of light ⚑️

Once I began working at a no-kill dog shelter, I learned even more about the unhealthy ingredients that make up the main brands of dog food, how many chemicals and additives and fillers are in them, and how some of these dog foods are made. It’s pretty unsavory πŸ˜·πŸ™…

I decided to compile some information and ideas about food alternatives for your four-legged friends to keep them healthy and fabulous πŸ©πŸ‘‘

Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice Plum Cake

sugar, spice, and everything nice plum cake

sugar plum cake

Eeeeee, look at those perfect little sugar plum circles πŸ”΄πŸ”΄πŸ”΄ This recipe really encompasses sugar, spice, and everything nice, especially that last part, because it’s vegan & gluten free 😘

I meant to post this recipe before spring popped up because it totally has cozy winter vibes happening, but cake is a year-round thing, so I figure there’s no time like the present. This would be a great rainy day treat, even in the summer.

I found sugar plums at Central Market at the end of this past summer and conjured up images of fairies and princesses and the Nutcracker and all that jazz, and knew I had to make something tasty. I decided to make a simpler, healthier version of sugar plum cake. It’s moist, not overly sweet, and pairs great with coffee πŸ°Β β˜•οΈ

The 5 Best All-Natural Oils For Your Face

5 best all natural oils for your face

I don’t know about you, but I get really excited talking about oils πŸ™ŒΒ πŸŒŸ

In a day and age when companies market their over processed, chemical-ridden skincare products as “all natural,” “moisturizing,” “anti-aging,” and so on, it’s nice to know I can depend on plants to save the day 🌿 As a vegan, I depend on plants for food and they provide all the nourishment I need. But they’re also the safest and most effective choice when it comes to skincare as well. For thousands of years, people used plants as medicine – and it worked. But today, consumers want eye catching packaging, famous spokespeople, and great marketing. It’s all smoke and mirrors. Do your research and you’ll realize that none of those products are actually good for your skin, in fact, some of them are terrible for your skin and your whole body.

If you go to my Health & Beauty page, you can read my Be Beautiful Inside and Out series that discusses what ingredients to stay away from and why, as well as the importance of picking humane beauty products that are not animal tested, and how chemicals infiltrate every part of our lives.

Kind of overwhelming to realize how much junk is in the products you may have been purchasing and using for years. I’m guilty of it myself. I now use all natural oils on my face each morning and night as my moisturizer and my face feels like a baby πŸ‘Ά

Salt & Vinegar Brussels Sprouts Chips

salt & vinegar brussels sprouts chips

brussels sprouts chips

I’ve been super healthy all week. No french fries. Not a lot of processed foods. But I’m craving something salty. I loooove chips. They are my weakness. So I decide to have a snack and pour myself a nice bowl of brussels sprouts chips?… No, I haven’t gone bonkers. And I know that chips and brussels sprouts aren’t normally put together in the same sentence. But for all you plant loving people out there that have made or eaten kale chips, it’s the same concept.

Crispy, salty, slightly tangy chips made from bite sized brussels sprouts that are drizzled in olive oil and baked in the oven. Yes. So much yes πŸ‘ŒπŸŽ‰

Did you know that this stinky, cruciferous veggie contains more cancer fighting phytonutrients than those found in kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, or mustard greens? Brussels sprouts are also anti-inflammatory, good for heart health, promote digestive support, and when cooked properly they contain tons of vitamin K, vitamin C, folate, and a host of other nutrients.

Southeast Texas: The Golden Triangle and Galveston

February 22, 2016 by Jillian Leave a Comment

southeast texas: the golden triangle and beaumont

southeast texas road trip

Southeast Texas is a true melting pot of people, culture, and landscape. You’ve got Houston – the largest city in the south – on the left, the beach on the right, and everything in between – piney woods, countryside, hurricanes, Louisiana influence, old southern customs, chemical plants & refineries, a growing art scene, and so much more!

πŸŒŠπŸŒ΄β˜€οΈβ˜”οΈπŸŽ·πŸ‘πŸš’πŸŒ²

The Golden Triangle, as the local residents call it, consists of Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange. The “golden” refers to the wealth that came from the Spindletop oil strike near Beaumont in 1901. Not too much further is the beach town of Galveston, which was first settled by Europeans in 1816 and is famous for the devastating hurricane of 1900.

There’s so much to do and see in this often overlooked part of Texas, and what follows are some of my favorite adventures…
