Description
Fannie Lou Hamer was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement and worked tirelessly to promote and advocate for women’s rights and voting rights. She was the co-founder and vice-chair of the Freedom Democratic Party, and she represented the party at the Democratic National Convention in 1964. She was born the youngest of 20 children; her parents were sharecroppers in Mississippi. She overcame many obstacles in her life, including being fired from her job for trying to register to vote and being severely beaten by police for her activism, the latter of which the physical injuries she never fully recovered from. Fannie is known for saying “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired” and it is inscribed on her tombstone.
