When I was about eight, I remember going on a school field trip to a natural site in Oklahoma to learn about geology. My mom was one of the chaperones on the trip and she allowed me to buy a purple amethyst crystal as a souvenir. I still have that amethyst, in fact, it is currently sitting on the side table next to me.
I have always been interested in crystals, and have friends that swear by them, but never took any time to learn about them until recently. I was at a museum in Huntsville, Texas and could not resist bringing home some of the exquisite crystals and stones from their gift shop. I looked up each individual one when I got home and discovered a plethora of information on them! Not only are crystals beautiful and diverse in appearance, they are incredibly healing because they have spent thousands of years forming within the earth’s surface and retain the earth’s energy. Therefore, you can benefit from this energy by keeping them close to you.
In this post I have compiled information on 7 different crystals with a focus on their physical, spiritual, and emotional healing properties and simple tips on how to use the crystals for these purposes. Enjoy and happy healing!

Background & History:
Sodalite is the shortened version of sodium aluminum silicate, which is what the stone is made up of. It is often known as “poor man’s Lapis” because of it’s similar blue color but is much more affordable. In ancient tombs and ruins, Sodalite has been discovered in places of ornamentation where Lapis Lazuli might have been expected. Sodalite was also frequently used by Egyptian priests to dispel guilt and fears, and to strengthen the power of mind over body. Sodalite has been discovered in the Caral-Chupacigarro settlement in Peru. Caral is the most ancient city of the Americas, where the stone was used for trading purposes. Additionally, it was traded at Lukurmata, a Pre-Columbian community and major ceremonial center in highland Bolivia.
In modern times, Sodalite was first discovered in 1811 in the Ilimaussaq complex in Greenland, and gained importance as an ornamental stone in 1891 when vast deposits were found in Ontario, Canada. The most celebrated source is the Princess Sodalite Mine just east of Bancroft, Ontario, named in 1901 for the Princess of Wales, when during a royal visit to the World’s Fair in Buffalo, New York, she was presented with a gift of Bancroft Sodalite and was so captivated by it that arrangements were made to quarry enough to decorate her London residence, Marlborough House. In 1906, 130 tons of the rock were shipped to England to be used as a decorative stone in the Princess’ royal home.

Sodalite increases consciousness, idealism, and striving for the truth, and eliminates guilt and fears better than any other stone. Place this stone under the doormat at your front door to repel unwanted energy and to represent clearing the obstacles in your life path. Looking at a shiny piece of black obsidian in low light is best, when you may see the images of loved ones in spirit. If you believe you may have come back to this life in order to resolve a past life issue, place a piece of the stone on the third eye and ask about this. This may help you to discover the purpose for being here in this life at this time. By asking questions aloud and listening, you may hear the answer whispered back to you. If you wish to boost the ability to receive precognitive messages it may be beneficial to use them in meditation. A shiny surface on the stone may enable you to see scenes of future events reflected in the stone, although messages may be received using any of your psychic senses. If you find that you receive messages or visions while dreaming, you may encourage precognitive dreaming using the energy of this stone. For this purpose it could be beneficial to place it in the bedroom close to where you sleep.
Apache Tears are a type of Black Obsidian, but they have a more friendly vibration than some of the other types of Obsidian and may be more comfortable for some to use.
