Description
Shirley Chisholm began her career as an educator, but soon began joining the local chapters of political organizations in New York. In 1964, she became the second African American ever elected to the New York State Legislature. Four years later, in 1968, she became the first African American woman elected to Congress. During her seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, Shirley introduced over 50 pieces of legislation and championed gender and racial equality among other issues.
Additionally, she was the co-founder of the Women’s Political Caucus and was the first African American woman (and second woman ever) to serve on the House Rules Committee. In 1972, she sought the presidential nomination for the Democratic Party, making her the first African American woman ever to do so. Despite the challenges and discrimination she faced on the campaign trail, Shirley stuck to her motto “Unbossed and Unbought,” making her an inspiration to women and girls everywhere.
