Friends for Life Animal Shelter in Houston

Look at these babiessss! Aren’t they gorgeous? I met them a few months ago at a Friends for Life adoption event in Houston. Friends for Life is one of only two LEED-certified no kill animal shelters in Texas. That means they are a certified green building ๐ŸŒฑ You definitely get a different feel when you walk through their doors, and I don’t just mean aesthetics. First of all, it’s quiet! Granted, the main part of the shelter open to the public only has about eight to ten dogs, but normally shelters are extremely loud and chaotic. Friends for Life, on the other hand, has a calm and peaceful vibe that is nice for visitors, but even nicer for the animals that live there.

I visited twice in one week, if that tells you anything! Check out the adorable cats and dogs that I met during my visits and all the wonderful facts I learned about this progressive no kill shelter ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ•

Cozying Up in Austin for the Holidays

christmas tree

During the Christmas/Hannukkah/New Year’s holidays I spent two weeks in Austin doing what I do best – house & pet sitting ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ•

Well, it’s not that difficult really, just super fun and you get to hang out with fur babies all day! I also got to spend lots of time doing my favorite things, including plenty of photography for my blog. The days in Austin leading up to my trip were super cold, so I was worried I was in for a chilly time, but upon my arrival the weather warmed up and I got to enjoy some very beautiful days.

I decided to write about my time spent in Austin over the holidays and post my favorite photos from the experience. I hope you enjoy it!

10 Secret Facts About Cats

September 18, 2016 by Jillian Leave a Comment

10 secret facts about cats

Looking through my blog you might get the impression that I’m more of a dog person, which may be the teeniest bit true ๐Ÿ˜ฎ but only because I worked so closely with dogs during my time at numerous animal shelters and volunteering with dog rescue groups.

However, I grew up with lots of cats that my family rescued and I have only respect and admiration for the feline persuasion. I’ll never forget bottle feeding my kitten Petey. My landlord’s neighbor found him abandoned in a barn when he was only about a week old. He fit in the palm of my hand and he had big blue eyes and I would bring him to work in a big canister lined with a fuzzy blanket so I could feed him every couple of hours. My dogs loved him, especially my pit mix Josie. She would give him lots of tongue baths and was very protective. It was adorable.

I love all of the cats in my life, past and current. I know there will be many more to come. And considering that cats are the most popular pet in the United States, here are some little known facts that I put together about these independent, intelligent and oftentimes sassy creatures ๐Ÿฑ

The Shelter Dogs of Beaumont, Texas

January 4, 2016 by Jillian Leave a Comment

the shelter dogs of beaumont, tx

You can tell just by looking at this dog that she’s had a rough life – you can see her ribs, the patchy spots of missing fur, she needs a bath, and if you look closely, you can see that she recently had puppies. Yet when I met this dog at the Beaumont Animal Shelter, she was calm and sweet and had such hopeful eyes. I’m not sure what happened to her. In an ideal world, she found a loving home that spoils her and loves her more than anything. But after spending the past couple of months in Beaumont, Texas and volunteering at the shelter, I’m obliged to think happy endings for these dogs are far and few between.

Coming here from Austin, Texas after working at the largest no-kill shelter in the U.S., it’s been pretty traumatic volunteering at a small shelter that still imposes what I consider outdated standards and protocol. I know they have good intentions and want to help the animals that come through their shelter, but they are also struggling in a region that isn’t as open minded and modern in their thinking of how pets and animals should be treated. I first visited Beaumont’s city shelter on my birthday back in May of this year. Here are a few of the dogs I saw —

Compassion In Numbers

March 29, 2015 by Jillian Leave a Comment

Today’s blog is all about numbers! Being a compassionate, caring individual that makes a difference in the world can be as easy as 1-2-3. In my opinion, it’s all about baby steps and focusing on what you can do today. Every little choice we make and every little action we take has a ripple effect. No matter how small of a good deed, it’s worth it and it impacts someone, we just don’t always witness that impact. Here are some simple suggestions to help you get started if you are overwhelmed or not sure where to begin.

ANIMALS

puppy love

Our furry friends need our help! Working with animals in various settings, especially homeless cats and dogs left to suffer their fates alone, I really realized how much of an impact I had on them just by spending ten minutes petting them or playing with them. It means the world to them. There are other ways to help out, too. Here are a few:
