Hiking Through Big Thicket National Preserve

The cool thing about southeast Texas is that there are a lot of national forests, thanks to all those piney trees 🌲 There’s lots to explore outdoors and back in March I decided to visit Big Thicket National Preserve, which is about a 45 minute drive from the city of Beaumont. Not only does this piney forest smell amazing (!) but it’s home to all sorts of wildlife and vegetation.

The preserve is broken up and spread out all over the area, with several different hiking trails for visitors to enjoy. On this particular day, I explored Kirby Trail near the visitor’s center, and the Sundew Trail just seven miles up the highway. Here are my favorite photos from the day πŸ“·

Living in southeast Texas means lots of rain and humidity and cloudy days and all the kinds of weather that make me sad 🌧 So as soon as a day rolled around that included sunshine and decent temperatures, I was out the door faster than you can say gluten free vegan πŸ’¨

I decided to head even farther southeast to the Sabine Pass Historic Battleground State Park and then down a little further to Sea Rim State Park, both being right on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. Here are my favorite photos from a day well spent.

Southeast Texas: The Golden Triangle and Galveston

southeast texas: the golden triangle and beaumont

southeast texas road trip

Southeast Texas is a true melting pot of people, culture, and landscape. You’ve got Houston – the largest city in the south – on the left, the beach on the right, and everything in between – piney woods, countryside, hurricanes, Louisiana influence, old southern customs, chemical plants & refineries, a growing art scene, and so much more!

πŸŒŠπŸŒ΄β˜€οΈβ˜”οΈπŸŽ·πŸ‘πŸš’πŸŒ²

The Golden Triangle, as the local residents call it, consists of Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange. The “golden” refers to the wealth that came from the Spindletop oil strike near Beaumont in 1901. Not too much further is the beach town of Galveston, which was first settled by Europeans in 1816 and is famous for the devastating hurricane of 1900.

There’s so much to do and see in this often overlooked part of Texas, and what follows are some of my favorite adventures…

La Sal del Rey & Raymondville, Texas

It’s raining yet again down here in southeast Texas and I still don’t have an umbrella for some reason β˜”οΈβ˜”οΈ Maybe because trying to frantically open one inside my car or the doorway of a building as rain splashes down around me is like trying to solve a Chinese puzzle box. It’s more trouble than it’s worth in my world, and I’d rather be rained on for a few seconds than open an umbrella πŸ’¦πŸ˜“πŸ’§

Umbrella or not, it’s really making me wish I was back in the Rio Grande Valley, where it was bright and sunny all day everyday like a tropical heaven β˜€οΈπŸŒ΄ I looooove this southernmost region of Texas almost as much as I love chocolate and puppies. I already wrote about being Vegan in the Rio Grande Valley and Exploring the Rio Grande Valley, and I have one more post in this three part series. Here are my favorite photos from my adventures to La Sal del Rey and Raymondville, Texas. [Read more…]

Exploring the Rio Grande Valley

I recently returned from a 10 day visit to the Rio Grande Valley region of Texas, which is located in the southernmost tip of South Texas. It lies along the northern bank of the Rio Grande river, which separates Mexico from the United States. This area is known as The Valley to locals, and not only does it boast natural beauty and lively culture, but it’s quite historic as well.

Last week I wrote about my experience being Vegan in the Rio Grande Valley, but this week I wanted to share the photos I took of all the cool places there are to visit in the region. I’m only sad I couldn’t stay longer, because there was a lot I didn’t get to see.

McAllen, Texas

This is one of the largest cities in the valley, but as someone that’s lived in huge cities, McAllen is just the right size. It still has a small town feel in certain ways, but lots of modern amenities so it was easy to find everything I needed. There’s lots of local events, which provided me a good chance to immerse myself in the community and interact with the locals.

cine el rey

The Cine El Rey Theatre hosts lots of events, including stand up comedy, open-mic night, wrestling, and musicals. They also offer tons of free movie screenings complete with free popcorn. I decided to join the local French Club for a Sunday matinee of a French thriller and it was pretty awesome. Free popcorn, drinks, donuts, cookies, and there’s couches in the theater if you prefer that to actual chairs πŸ™‚
