Pit Bull Awareness Day Festival

November 7, 2016 by Jillian Leave a Comment

pit bull awareness day festival

pit bulls

A festival dedicated to pit bulls? Those blocky headed, big tongued, wiggly butted, wet nosed beasts that get a rap but are really just as sweet and good natured as every other dog on the planet? Um, yes, I’ll be there!

The 8th Annual Pit Bull Awareness Day Festival happened in Austin, Texas on Sunday, October 23rd. It was held by Love-a-Bull, a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing pit bulls in need and finding them good homes. There were lots of vendors, a silent auction, food trucks, and of course the most adorable pit bulls known to man ๐Ÿถ

I got there just as the pittie parade kicked things off with a dog walk around the park. So many pibbles dressed up and wiggling their butts! Then I got to explore all the rescue groups, enjoy an intro by local DJ Deb of 101x who is a dog enthusiast, watch some very well behaved dogs demonstrate their skills on the agility course, look at the local goods that vendors handcrafted, and watch pit bulls roll around in the kiddie pools set up around the park.

And everything was to benefit rescue pits! It sort of felt like heaven being surrounded by these fun loving dogs. Here are my favorite photos from the day ๐Ÿ“ท

A Guide to What Your Dog Should Really Be Eating

a guide to what your dog should really be eating

When I first went vegan about six years ago, it didn’t take long at all for me to look at my dogs and wonder “What about them?” I began to do research about what my dogs were eating, which at the time was store bought dog food. I discovered that a lot of the same things that are good for humans are good for our domesticated companions, and that many people make homemade dog food over feeding them processed foods. I also discovered that when I whenever I cooked food for them at home, they wolfed it down faster than the speed of light โšก๏ธ

Once I began working at a no-kill dog shelter, I learned even more about the unhealthy ingredients that make up the main brands of dog food, how many chemicals and additives and fillers are in them, and how some of these dog foods are made. It’s pretty unsavory ๐Ÿ˜ท๐Ÿ™…

I decided to compile some information and ideas about food alternatives for your four-legged friends to keep them healthy and fabulous ๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿ‘‘

The Shelter Dogs of Beaumont, Texas

January 4, 2016 by Jillian Leave a Comment

the shelter dogs of beaumont, tx

You can tell just by looking at this dog that she’s had a rough life – you can see her ribs, the patchy spots of missing fur, she needs a bath, and if you look closely, you can see that she recently had puppies. Yet when I met this dog at the Beaumont Animal Shelter, she was calm and sweet and had such hopeful eyes. I’m not sure what happened to her. In an ideal world, she found a loving home that spoils her and loves her more than anything. But after spending the past couple of months in Beaumont, Texas and volunteering at the shelter, I’m obliged to think happy endings for these dogs are far and few between.

Coming here from Austin, Texas after working at the largest no-kill shelter in the U.S., it’s been pretty traumatic volunteering at a small shelter that still imposes what I consider outdated standards and protocol. I know they have good intentions and want to help the animals that come through their shelter, but they are also struggling in a region that isn’t as open minded and modern in their thinking of how pets and animals should be treated. I first visited Beaumont’s city shelter on my birthday back in May of this year. Here are a few of the dogs I saw —

Wintertime at Rowdy Girl Sanctuary

December 17, 2015 by Jillian 2 Comments

winterizing rowdy girl

This is how I like my chickenย โ˜๏ธ alive and showered with love ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ”I had such a great time during My Visit to Rowdy Girl Sanctuary back in September, that I just had to come back for more! Renee and Tommy are working so hard for the dozens of animals that would otherwise be slaughtered for food, and since I don’t live super far from their sanctuary in southeast Texas, I signed up to be a volunteer ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŽ‰ I couldn’t wait to see to see all my furry friends again and meet the newly rescued residents, including 2 pigs ๐Ÿท and several cows from Florida ๐Ÿฎ

During this most recent trip to Rowdy Girl, Renee described to me all the preparations her and Tommy are making to ensure that the animals stay safe and comfortable this winter. Texas winters aren’t exactly brutal, but with immensely unpredictable weather, and all that rain coming from the coast, it can cause very treacherous grounds for the animals ๐ŸŒŠโ„๏ธ The pathways get so muddy that the cows’ legs sink down several inches and that’s no fun ๐Ÿ˜ž especially when it’s meal time and they want to get their food!

Vegans Love Pitbulls!

July 27, 2015 by Jillian Leave a Comment

Last month there were so many animal events going on in Austin that I could barely keep my head on straight! There were also a lot of vegan events, so as you can imagine, I felt like a kid on Christmas – if Christmas was in June and lasted the entire month.ย ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ„

Since I’m really busy this week working on a film job, I thought I would just post some of my favorite pictures from a couple of those events. Scroll down to see cute pitties, delicious vegan food, and some of the fun happenings that make Austin such a cool city.

Weekly Reunion Rescue @ Spiderhouse

Reunion Rescue is a local pitbull rescue group and founder Cindy sets up camp at a popular coffeehouse near the University of Texas to educate people, get donations to help the dogs, and most importantly, get them adopted! On the particular day that I showed up, there were 3 adorable pitbulls with Cindy, all looking for their forever homes.

As you can see above, Amber was an abuse case and most likely had acid or something similar poured over her head. Yet when I met her, she was as sweet as could be and loves children!
