Yaqui Animal Rescue

I first heard about Yaqui Animal Rescue while walking through one of the buildings on my university’s campus. I noticed handmade signs directing people where they could drop off donations for the group. I soon found an event that Yaqui was having near campus and decided to go check it out. After meeting lots of cute dogs at this event, I learned that the group rescues all kinds of animals: horses, donkeys, bunnies, cat, pigs, chickens, geese, and more! When they invited me to visit the ranch, I immediately said yes!

The Yaqui ranch is located in Sullivan City, a small town in South Texas. The founder of Yaqui, Sonia Venecia, purchased the property in 2004 for the sole purpose of using it as a no-kill shelter for animals in need. It once belonged to her grandparents and was a working ranch. Sonia decided to name her new rescue group after her grandmother’s ancestors, the Yaqui Indians.

I brought my camera along to observe life at the Yaqui ranch. It’s pretty much an animal lover’s dream. For me, there’s nothing better than being able to watch animals be animals without the threat of harm or exploitation. I wish all animals could have such a peaceful experience on this planet.

Check out the photos from my recent visits to this awesome rescue ranch, plus a short video (directly below) detailing daily life for the beautiful creatures that reside at Yaqui Animal Rescue.

The Quiet Consequences of Elephant Poaching

July 21, 2016 by Jillian 2 Comments

the quiet consequences of elephant poaching

I’ve always loved elephants for as long as I can remember. The older I get, the more amazed I am by them. They are incredible and endearing. They are wrinkly and gorgeous. They are smart and feel many of the same emotions as humans. And they are disappearing at an alarming rate.

It’s pretty common knowledge that this tragedy is due largely to the ivory trade. Presently, eight out of ten elephants are killed for their ivory, rather than dying naturally. Despite recent efforts to ban the trade of ivory, elephants could be extinct in 10-15 years with the current rate of poaching.

What most people don’t think about, however, is the baby elephants that are left for dead when their families are killed for ivory, the poacher’s side of the story, and the entire ecosystem supported by the presence of these magnificent creatures.

I sat down and watched the critically acclaimed documentary Gardeners of Eden to learn more about the struggle behind poaching & the ivory trade, and the incredible organization in Africa fighting to save an entire species. The following are facts that everyone should know.

Wintertime at Rowdy Girl Sanctuary

December 17, 2015 by Jillian 2 Comments

winterizing rowdy girl

This is how I like my chickenย โ˜๏ธ alive and showered with love ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ”I had such a great time during My Visit to Rowdy Girl Sanctuary back in September, that I just had to come back for more! Renee and Tommy are working so hard for the dozens of animals that would otherwise be slaughtered for food, and since I don’t live super far from their sanctuary in southeast Texas, I signed up to be a volunteer ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŽ‰ I couldn’t wait to see to see all my furry friends again and meet the newly rescued residents, including 2 pigs ๐Ÿท and several cows from Florida ๐Ÿฎ

During this most recent trip to Rowdy Girl, Renee described to me all the preparations her and Tommy are making to ensure that the animals stay safe and comfortable this winter. Texas winters aren’t exactly brutal, but with immensely unpredictable weather, and all that rain coming from the coast, it can cause very treacherous grounds for the animals ๐ŸŒŠโ„๏ธ The pathways get so muddy that the cows’ legs sink down several inches and that’s no fun ๐Ÿ˜ž especially when it’s meal time and they want to get their food!

Anatomy of a Dog Rescue

May 15, 2015 by Jillian Leave a Comment

dog rescue

Animal rescue is something very near and dear to my heart, and dog rescue is something that I’ve been lucky enough to actively participate in. It’s gut wrenching, heartbreaking, stressful, tragic, inspiring, and extremely rewarding. It’s taught me that every life counts and every life is worth saving and fighting for.

I want to tell you a story about a very special dog named Pretty Girl. She’s taught me a lot and I’m very proud of her. If you look closely at the photo above, you’ll notice that Pretty Girl is missing one of her front legs. This by no means defines her, it merely makes her extra cute & unique.

If you’ve ever rescued, adopted, or loved a dog, maybe you can relate to this post and the struggles I went through for this girl. Regardless, I think everyone can relate to fighting for something they believe in and for someone they love. This “someone” just happens to have a shiny fur coat and a wet nose.

Little Ways to Make a Big Difference

August 21, 2014 by Jillian Leave a Comment

rescue dog

I think most people agree that in general, we all like animals and we all want to help them. Working at animal shelters, I got to witness firsthand how amazing and kind some people can be when it comes to helping a cat or dog in need. However, I also witnessed that many people don’t know how to help or don’t think to in the first place. Unfortunately, humans have become so conditioned to believe that we matter more than our furry counterparts that we’re used to seeing animals lying in the road that were run over, we’re used to hearing about all the healthy companion animals that are “euthanized” in shelters every year, we’re used to hunting and killing animals for entertainment, and we’re used to eating animals without giving it a second thought. Kinda crazy when you stop and think about it, right? I mean, we’ve been controlling animals minds and bodies for thousands of years without ever really wondering what the true consequence of that is. We’re finally beginning to see some of those severe consequences.

What’s really going on?

Studies show that this current generation of children in America are the first that will shorter lives than their parents. That seems to sort of go against evolution… And it’s all due to the dairy, meat, gluten, and processed foods they are consuming. And it’s spreading across the world. Asia always had the lowest rates of cancer and heart disease because it’s a traditionally vegetarian area. But as soon as they began adopting Western eating styles, their rates of cancer and heart disease steadily rose.

Another scary fact is that we are running out of water, as well as farm-able land. Why? Because of factory farming. Eating cheap meat and dairy has become so popular that this world must sustain the billions of animals that produce this meat and dairy. That means water. Animals consume a lot of water. They also consume a lot of food. These animals are fed corn and grain (not what they’re supposed to be eating in the first place) and corn and grain need a place to grow. That means cutting down the rainforests and other natural habitats to grow these crops. Statistics shows that if we got rid of factory farming and instead used those resources to grow fruits and vegetables and healthy grains, we could easily feed all the starving people in the world. In fact, we would never have starving people. Oh, and animals on factory farms emit more methane gases than all the cars in the world combined.

That’s all the bad news. The good news is, we can do things in our daily lives to make a difference. And if everybody does little things that make a difference, then we can begin to reverse all the damage that’s been done and literally save the world. If we could save the world and also spare animals from the intense suffering they experience at our hands, why wouldn’t we?

One of the things that has interested me about the One of the things that has interested me about the horrific scene at the Capitol yesterday is the connection between veganism and colonialism. Some of the mob members yesterday were proudly covered in the skins of dead animals. To me, it's no surprise that white male supremacists are speceiests at their core. They believe they are inherently superior. They have historically compared people of color to animals, and treated them as sadistcally as they treat animals. In America, the government orchestrated the slaughtering of 60 million buffalo for no other reason than as a way to starve Indians into submission. Among other things, white supremacy and colonialism is linked to an obsession with killing, hunting, and dominating over others. So here are some bomb homemade VEGAN Butterfinger I made yesterday. Free of cruelty and made from plants. I'm not just vegan for the animals, I'm vegan for people because it is all connected.
