Does the Golden Rule Only Extend to Humans?

April 14, 2017 by Jillian 2 Comments

does the golden rule only extend to humans?

This is Jackson, my very first dog. I brought him home from the animal shelter because, well, he was a hot mess. He was so skinny his ribs were showing, he was throwing up and had diarrhea due to untreated intestinal worms, he was dirty, his teeth looked like those of a senior dog even though he was less than two years old, he flinched at every sound, and he was terrified of men. In fact, for the first several days, I had to physically carry him from place to place because he was often too afraid to even walk a few feet.

I have no clue what happened to Jackson before I brought him home. He was found roaming the streets. That’s all I know. I can only imagine the terrible things he experienced and I often wonder, if only people had treated him the way they would have wanted to be treated, he never would’ve been neglected, abused, or traumatized. To this day, nearly eight years later, he’s still extremely timid and skittish.

I recently watched a documentary on Netflix called Live and Let Live. It’s a thoughtful examination about the relationship between animals and humans, and it discusses the meaningful reasons why people choose to be vegan. It really made me think about this idea of the Golden Rule, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” which typically involves human to human interactions. But it’s important for people to understand that by not extending the same courtesy to animals and the environment, we’re not only hurting them, but ourselves. We must understand that everything is interconnected and if we want to do good, we must do good to all.

Friends for Life Animal Shelter in Houston

Look at these babiessss! Aren’t they gorgeous? I met them a few months ago at a Friends for Life adoption event in Houston. Friends for Life is one of only two LEED-certified no kill animal shelters in Texas. That means they are a certified green building 🌱 You definitely get a different feel when you walk through their doors, and I don’t just mean aesthetics. First of all, it’s quiet! Granted, the main part of the shelter open to the public only has about eight to ten dogs, but normally shelters are extremely loud and chaotic. Friends for Life, on the other hand, has a calm and peaceful vibe that is nice for visitors, but even nicer for the animals that live there.

I visited twice in one week, if that tells you anything! Check out the adorable cats and dogs that I met during my visits and all the wonderful facts I learned about this progressive no kill shelter 🐈🐕

Cozying Up in Austin for the Holidays

cozying up in the austin for the holidays

christmas tree

During the Christmas/Hannukkah/New Year’s holidays I spent two weeks in Austin doing what I do best – house & pet sitting 🏡🐕

Well, it’s not that difficult really, just super fun and you get to hang out with fur babies all day! I also got to spend lots of time doing my favorite things, including plenty of photography for my blog. The days in Austin leading up to my trip were super cold, so I was worried I was in for a chilly time, but upon my arrival the weather warmed up and I got to enjoy some very beautiful days.

I decided to write about my time spent in Austin over the holidays and post my favorite photos from the experience. I hope you enjoy it!

2016 Wrap Up

December 20, 2016 by Jillian 2 Comments

2016 wrap up

This little guy was definitely one of my best memories from the past year.

galveston beach

And traveling.

banana nice cream

And food of course!

Wow.  2016 has been an interesting year for me both personally and professionally. I spent most of it in Beaumont, a small town in southeast Texas near the Louisiana border. It provided me with a bit of culture shock to say the least. I’ve lived mainly in Austin and Dallas where people are very health conscious, animal friendly and open minded, so being thrown into a southern town where most people are behind in these areas was quite an adjustment.

But I survived! …and in the process, learned a lot about myself and others.

Pit Bull Awareness Day Festival

November 7, 2016 by Jillian Leave a Comment

pit bull awareness day festival

pit bulls

A festival dedicated to pit bulls? Those blocky headed, big tongued, wiggly butted, wet nosed beasts that get a rap but are really just as sweet and good natured as every other dog on the planet? Um, yes, I’ll be there!

The 8th Annual Pit Bull Awareness Day Festival happened in Austin, Texas on Sunday, October 23rd. It was held by Love-a-Bull, a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing pit bulls in need and finding them good homes. There were lots of vendors, a silent auction, food trucks, and of course the most adorable pit bulls known to man 🐶

I got there just as the pittie parade kicked things off with a dog walk around the park. So many pibbles dressed up and wiggling their butts! Then I got to explore all the rescue groups, enjoy an intro by local DJ Deb of 101x who is a dog enthusiast, watch some very well behaved dogs demonstrate their skills on the agility course, look at the local goods that vendors handcrafted, and watch pit bulls roll around in the kiddie pools set up around the park.

And everything was to benefit rescue pits! It sort of felt like heaven being surrounded by these fun loving dogs. Here are my favorite photos from the day 📷
