Compassion In Numbers

March 29, 2015 by Jillian Leave a Comment

Today’s blog is all about numbers! Being a compassionate, caring individual that makes a difference in the world can be as easy as 1-2-3. In my opinion, it’s all about baby steps and focusing on what you can do today. Every little choice we make and every little action we take has a ripple effect. No matter how small of a good deed, it’s worth it and it impacts someone, we just don’t always witness that impact. Here are some simple suggestions to help you get started if you are overwhelmed or not sure where to begin.

ANIMALS

puppy love

Our furry friends need our help! Working with animals in various settings, especially homeless cats and dogs left to suffer their fates alone, I really realized how much of an impact I had on them just by spending ten minutes petting them or playing with them. It means the world to them. There are other ways to help out, too. Here are a few:

Look at the difference in Marnie, one of the dogs from the shelter I worked at, when I took her to the park for an hour:

Every time after that, when Marnie saw me at the shelter she got soooo excited because she remembered me taking her to the park and how fun it was. One hour of my life was all it took. So worth it.

FOOD

Being vegan is a sure fire way to make a difference in the world, not just for animals, but for the environment, world hunger, and for your body & mind. If being vegan isn’t on your radar just yet,  consider instating Meatless Monday, buying from local farmers, or informing yourself about the devastating effects that factory farming has on the world. Making educated food choices is the best way to make a difference with every bite you take!

ENVIRONMENT

We are quickly killing the planet we inhabit. Take a minute to think about what this means for your children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Will they even have a planet to live on? We should treat this earth the way we treat our children and loved ones – with gratitude, gentility, kindness, and respect. And I feel it’s so important to teach our children how to care for the environment. Here are some simple ideas to incorporate in your everyday life that make a difference.

One more environmental issue to consider:

how long does garbage stay in the ocean?
So there you have it. All these reasons and more are why it’s important to not only lend a compassionate hand, but teach compassion to the future generation. Educate yourself, educate others, and implement tiny little changes in your life that make a difference for every living creature and plant on this earth. If you have any other simple ideas, I’d love to hear them!
